Strawberry Mojito – Savory Style

I am so excited about strawberry season and I know you are too! I mean, who isn’t, righttt?

Have you ever found yourself with way too many strawberries? Yes, it can happen! Case in point: I got carried away recently picking fresh strawberries at an organic farm and went home with a gigantic bag that I was told would be best eaten within two to three days.

Farm-fresh strawberries picked at the peak of ripeness are out of this world and simply the best, so no complaints from me. I am more than happy to snack on them throughout the day and I’m sure, between my husband and I, we can get through the bag in no time.

Of course, we can make desserts with them too, but you know what’s faster and easier? A strawberry cocktail!

Why not spice up the classic mojito recipe by adding some strawberries to it? Oh, the fruity sweetness pairs so well with the zesty flavors of lime and mint.

And let’s not forget the beautiful caramel quality of rum. I don’t think you need anymore convincing, do you?

Strawberry mojito is such a sweet, refreshing drink that can easily be whipped up using simple ingredients. It certainly delivers instant gratification and a worthy toast to the wonderful strawberry season.

The best part is you can use those weathered, bruised or slighter older strawberries and no one would know. Frankly, I don’t think anyone would mind either because those strawberries are just fine.

And who would be opposed to a trick or two that helps minimize food waste? Most definitely not me.

Wait, alcohol not your thing? No problem. Make a mocktail or a virgin strawberry mojito by simply omitting the rum. It’s just as good, I promise!

If possible, buy organic strawberries, or pick them at an organic farm. Conventional strawberries top the Dirty Dozen list of Environmental Working Group’s 2016 Shopper’s Guide to Pesticide in Produce.

Eating fresh fruits is a great way to obtain nutrients. Strawberries are packed with nutrients and are an excellent source of vitamin C and dietary fiber.

By choosing organic strawberries, you can reap the health benefits without the exposure to potentially harmful chemicals.

Spring around here is moving very quickly into Summer and we’re consistently experiencing some hot, sunny days that call for an icy thirst-quencher. Strawberry mojito to the rescue!

It’s the perfect drink for a summer cookout, so be sure to serve this at your next BBQ party. And don’t forget to also make the non-alcoholic version so everyone can enjoy it too, including the kids.

Here’s a toast to the delicious goodness of strawberries!

  • 2 to 3 fresh strawberries, hulled and cut into small pieces
  • 1 lime, cut into wedges
  • 8 to 10 fresh mint leaves
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • Crushed ice
  • 2 oz. light or dark rum*
  • Sparkling water, to top
  • 1 whole strawberry, for garnish
  1. Place the strawberries, lime, mint, and sugar in a glass. Using a muddler or the back of your spoon, mash the ingredients to release the juices and mix them together.
  2. Fill about half the glass with ice on top of the ingredients.
  3. Add the rum and stir well until the sugar is dissolved.
  4. Add more ice and then top with sparkling water and stir gently to combine.
  5. Garnish with a whole strawberry and enjoy!

*To make a mocktail or virgin strawberry mojito, simply omit the rum. It’s just as good!
